Fundraising Consultant
The American Association of Blacks in Higher Education is seeking an experienced Fundraising Consultant to assist with identifying financial resources through relationship-building and grant writing with foundations, corporations, higher education organizations, and individual donors.
An ideal candidate would have proven experience and success in securing major contributions from a variety of sources, and extensive knowledge of, and connections within, the higher education community. S/he should possess strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently.
About Our Organization
The American Association of Blacks in Higher Education (AABHE) pursues the educational and professional needs of Blacks in higher education with a focus on leadership, access and vital issues impacting students, faculty, staff, and administrators. AABHE also facilitates and provides opportunities for collaborating and networking among individuals, institutions, groups, and agencies within higher education throughout the United States and Internationally.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with AABHE Executive Committee to initiate and build relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors, and secure funding
- Develop a list of top foundation and corporate prospects at the local and national level
- Manage and track all donor information, and develop a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors
- Assist AABHE in finding sponsors for distinguished programs and initiatives: (i.e. LMI, International Study Tour, Dissertation Award, Research Journal, and Career Center)
Requirements and Desired Skills and Experience
- At least 5 years of professional experience in the nonprofit development field
- A proven record of securing major contributions from foundations, corporations, and additional sources
- Experience working for nonprofit(s) of similar scope and size of AABHE
- Registered as a professional fundraiser
- Experience researching and securing gifts from individuals
- Access to high net worth databases and subscriptions to capacity research tools is a plus
- Extensive knowledge of, and connections to the minority higher education philanthropic community
- Proven experience with having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, an ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors while building long-term relationships
- A Bachelor’s degree is required, Master’s preferred
- High energy and a passion for AABHE’s mission and goals are essential
- Strong organizational and time management skills with an exceptional attention to detail
Terms and conditions
The Fundraising Consultant will work 20 hours per month, with a flexible schedule, on an initial contract for 6 months. S/he will report to and work closely with the AABHE President and Executive Committee. The Consultant will generate a monthly report that tracks the work and progress.
Most of the work will be remote, with monthly meetings with the President so the President can provide a report to the board.
At the end of the 6-month probationary period, a mid-year report will be submitted and reviewed to assess progress and needs. The Contract is negotiable.
